The Duncairn

Putting arts at the heart of North Belfast since 2014, come and see what’s going on in Belfast’s Cultural Quarter!

The Duncairn for the environment

The Duncairn for the environment

Here at the Duncairn sustainability is high up on the agenda.

We have the health of our land at heart just as much as the wellbeing of our community. This is why we are committed to lead by example and embrace sustainable practices.

Our new nature-inspired mural

Our new nature-inspired mural

You surely remember that we implemented a total ban on single-use plastic on our premises when we were open (do not expect us to lose it after Covid). What you probably don’t know yet, is that we also commissioned a colourful nature-inspired mural for our patio. We also formed partnerships with Friends of the Hearth and the Centre for Sustainability, Equality and Climate Action (SECA), Queen’s University Belfast, and have been invited to join the Community Climate Action Working Group (CCAWG), which is the first working group to be established as part of Belfast Climate Commission.

Our goal is to become the first green art centre in Belfast!

Yes, we’re taking sustainability seriously, and we want you onboard. In fact, we want you more than onboard, we want you to help us get a European grant for a new environmental project.

If we get the grant, we will be able to transform our grassy patches outside the main entrance into a wildflower meadow and herb garden to be enjoyed by lovely bees and the local community in the summer months. We will then host a spectacular Wildflower Weekend, during which we’ll have the chance to learn about climate change, how to reduce waste, and the circular economy while also having lots of fun at upcycling workshops, repair cafe, and the big book swap corner!

We've all been told that we should recycle plastic bottles and containers. But what actually happens to the plastic if we just throw it away? Emma Bryce traces the life cycles of three different plastic bottles, shedding light on the dangers these disposables present to our world.
