Meet the artist: Lucy Turner
Meet Lucy Turner, a fantastic textile artist specialising in printing on linen. In fact, you might already know her or her work. Lucy’s artwork has been on sale in the Duncairn art shop and she has delivered several workshops and classes for us.
I took the opportunity to ask Lucy a bit more about her and her art, and to introduce the new online printmaking course she’ll deliver for the Duncairn starting in March (sold out!).
Lucy, tell me about your first encounter with printmaking?
It was in ‘Bangor tech’ many years ago. I loved the repeat pattern element, I originally thought I would study printed textiles.
What made you decide to pursue printmaking as a career?
Six years at University I never thought that I would not be an practising artist!
What inspires you most in your work?
Printmaking has many layers, craft, sculpture, skill, drawing, creativity, discipline and chance; using one or all of these factors within my working practise has given me a career. I have developed a style in printmaking pushing boundaries by developing unique and experimental processes. This investigational approach has given me the opportunity to participate in international exhibitions and residencies, both in Ireland and abroad. The process include printing directly on copper brass and stainless steel, suitable for interior and exterior setting. This process has also awarded many commissions, primarily in the health care sector.
What will people learn in your course?
The four week course is a taster in Lino cutting. Interestingly we will be looking at cutting, printing and painting to create a 3d butterfly garland.
You can find more information about Lucy and her art on her website: lucyturnerart.com, which also has a shop so you can buy her amazing artefacts.
