Meet the artist: Andrea McCullough-Alderdice
Let’s meet Andrea McCullough-Alderdice from Relatively Ceramics. With 20 years of experience creating wonderful objects in her very distinctive style, we are very excited to have her work with us. Adrea will be delivering the new Zoom ceramics course for the Duncairn, starting on the 6th of March (sorry, fully booked!).
I’ve had a little chat with Andrea and I’m excited to introduce this lovely artist to you all.
Tell me about your first encounter with ceramics?
My dad is a builder and from a young age I remember playing and modelling with window putty which is so like clay, from them I was hooked.
What is special about this art?
I love the idea that a lump of soft clay can be transformed into so many different things. Clay is so soft and responsive to touch. It is so appealing no matter what your age.
Relatively Ceramics creations are very distinctive and recognisable. How do you describe your creations?
My own work is dotty and colourful. I love adding clay buttons and bunting to my work, I find them so uplifting.
Andrea’s course is open to children from the age of 5. I’ve asked her what makes ceramics suitable for kids to learn?
My pottery classes use an easy step by step method. We slap, tap and roll the clay. We get our fingers sticky with coloured clay and see our masterpieces form in front of us. It is just good, messy fun.
