Come and learn some simple techniques to mend your clothes and more.

Learn how to sew on a button, fix a hem and deal with patches.

This session is run by Repair Cafe Belfast, which runs pop up events across the city, where volunteers skilled in repair help people fix their broken things for free. They have also been doing regular online mending pile meet ups this year.

What to bring so you can sew along: a needle, thread, a button or two, three flat bits of fabric - any colour, pattern or scrap will do, as long as they are about the size of a book - like a clean rag, old tea towel or t-shirt.

Sustainable Fashion : Up-cycled Shirt (WW)

Being greener about fashion is easy when you decide to reduce the amount of clothing that you buy in future. Buying only what you need from ethical companies and those that produce eco ranges, shopping in second -hand shops and vintage stores, and altering, customizing, and mending your existing clothing.

Men’s shirts – whether liberated from your boyfriend/husband or acquired at a charity shop – are ideal for upcycling into something new for you. They are often made from good quality cotton and are well finished. Just because collar and cuffs are worn or outdated, there’s no need to chuck out all that great fabric. A few slight alterations can make all the difference.

In this workshop, sewing machine wizard Bernie will show you how to transform an outdated man shirt into the perfect lady’s summer top.

YOU WILL NEED

Large man’s shirt

Sewing machine

Pins

Tape measure

Thread to match shirt + yellow and green for daisy

Scraps of white fabric for applique daisies

Iron

Buttons
