Sumi-e, or Japanese ink painting, is a 2000-year-old artform brought to Japan through Korea and China. Evolved to become more subtle and more elegant, the art remains rooted in concentration, clarity and simplicity.
During the course you will create black and white traditional Japanese pictures of nature using liquid charcoal, traditional techniques and tools; the class will cover traditional Bamboo, Cherry blossom and Wild Orchid themes.
Sumi-e has its roots in Chinese painting but with Japanese Zen philosophy, and during the course participants will also explore and discover elements of Japanese culture.
