The Environment Defenders
Back in June, we held a fantastic comic workshop for children as part of the Wildflower Weekend, an event we co-organised with the European Network of Cultural Centres (ENCC) to raise awareness on the climate crisis. The workshop was calling participants to find ways to help saving our seas (represented by Oceania) from plastic waste. The children’s dedication and enthusiasm were unparalleled, and together they came up with brilliant ideas which they then developed into a comic with the guidance of artist and tutor Jim Lavery.
After two sessions of hard work by all those involved and numerous revisions, the first issue of the Environment Defenders has been published (on recycled paper, of course!).
The story features three exceptional environment defenders:
Foxanne aka Eleanor Dot Turley Min, aged 8
Otterboy aka Páraic Gilmore. Age 8
Duos aka Conor Downey, Aged 11
The comic was only the first step in our efforts of raising awareness about the climate change crisis locally, and with the support of ENCC, we put together 165 environmental kits that we have distributed to local children with the help of Currie Primary and Holy Family Primary schools.
On top of the comic, the kits also contain a reusable water bottle for children to use throughout their academic year, and a handful of wildflower seed bombs to spread around the garden or in public green areas.
